Whether it’s for a new year’s resolution, or a plan to fit into that dream wedding dress, weight loss is by far the most common goal for people all over the world. We often set goals or target weights, believing that once we get that hard to achieve number all our problems will instantly be solved! However, more often than not, our ideal bodies aren’t attached to a number on scale, nor does our hard work translate to that hard-to-achieve flat stomach, or those perfectly toned legs.
The reason behind this issue is simple enough. Our body chemistry is different person to person, and body composition doesn’t guarantee that dropping pounds means dropping inches on our waists. Imagine if you could simply choose where and when the pounds come off? Simply deciding to reduce 1-2lbs off your thighs, or 3lbs off that tough-to-lose belly. That’s where a procedure like Liposuction comes into play!
What is Liposuction?
Liposuction is a procedure that allows patients to slim down and reshape specific areas of the body. Excess fat deposits are removed from the targeted area, shaping and contouring your body to your exact desires!
Often times diet and exercise simply aren’t enough and in order to specifically target areas of the body it can take months to years in order to achieve what can be done within minutes with liposuction. Liposuction is often used in conjunction with other cosmetic procedures, allowing patients to both enhance and tone their problem areas at the same time.
Who is a good candidate for Liposuction?
During your consult, we will perform a thorough examination of the subject area to determine if you are a good candidate for the procedure, taking into account, overall health and expectations.
The best candidates for liposuction are those who have tried to lose body fat through diet and exercise and realized it simply isn’t enough. Those who have maintained a healthy weight, yet find it impossible to tone and contour specific areas of the body to their liking. Liposuction can remove stored fat cells in parts of the body such as:
Waist, and stomach area
Hips and buttocks
Back, both upper & lower
Face: cheeks, chin, jawline, and neck
The ideal candidates have excess fat cells in these areas, while also having healthy, supple skin, with adequate tone and laxity. The elasticity of the skin is important because as the fat cells are removed from the body, the skin must be able to “snap-back” and conform to the body’s new size and shape. For those who lack elasticity in their skin, other procedures may help, by trimming the excess skin. This depends on which part of the body is being treated.
To begin the procedure, we will draw guidelines, showing the necessary areas for corrections, as discussed pre-op. While the patient is under general anesthesia, a tumescent solution will be inserted into the treatment area, loosening up fat cells making them more pliable.
Small incisions are then made into the area, while a narrow cannula is inserted into the fat deposits. Moving the cannula back and forth, we will break up the fat cells, loosening them up further. Using suction, the fat cells are then collected for disposal. In some cases, they may be used for fat transfers, like with a Brazilian Butt Lift.
After the fat is removed, compression bandages are wrapped around the area and the incisions. And the procedure is complete.
After the procedure, we will provide you with compression garments to wear in order to manage post-op swelling. Recovery can typically last 7-10 days, at which point you can resume normal activities. However, refrain from strenuous workouts and lifting heavy weights for at least a few weeks after the procedure.
During your recovery, adequate rest is required for proper healing, also make sure to protect the area from any trauma. After the swelling subsides, you will see your new, smoother, more slender body.
The fat removal was a permanent procedure; therefore, with proper diet and exercise your results will last for a very long time. Try to keep from gaining weight in the area otherwise the results will disappear. Some choose to repeat liposuction many times over on different body parts as it is one of the more common cosmetic surgeries.
